Film Review: ‘XXX: return of Xander Cage’ as useless as it gets

Honestly, I went for this flick only to check how well our own Deepika Padukone has performed in her first Hollywood Movie. In one sentence, she is good. There are 6 female leads of whom Deepika has been given the best footage. In the first half, a new character is introduced every five minutes which does nothing but adds to the confusion. The films has been targeted at the Asian markets which is why it is overloaded with actors from India(Deepika), Thailand(Tony Jaa), China(Kris Wu) and Hong Kong(Donnie Yen). Every one of them keeps frolicking from here to there, for only God knows what! The Background score and the 3D effects are awesome. The action is great but has little new to offer. Looks like Every frame of the movie has been seen before. The dialogues are hilariously unfunny and the storyline is a big zero. Deepika has got a longer role, but, sadly, the length doesn’t end in a meatier performance. No need to mention even a word for Vin-Bald-Diesel because I never liked him. In all, this mindless action movie is totally avoidable. 2 stars out of 5.       

ફિલ્મ રિવ્યૂઃ ‘XXX- રિટર્ન ઓફ ઝેન્ડર કેજ’ મગજ વગરની મારફાડ

દીપિકા પાદુકોણેની પહેલી હોલિવુડ ફિલ્મ હોવાથી જ જોવા જવાયું, પણ ફિલ્મમાં એક્શન સિવાય બીજું કશું જ નથી. ઇન્ટરવલ સુધીની ફિલ્મમાં તો દર પાંચ મિનિટે નવા કલાકારની એન્ટ્રી થતી રહે છે જે કન્ફ્યુઝન વધારવાનું કામ કરે છે. ફિલ્મમાં છ-છ મહિલા પાત્રો છે, પણ સંતોષજનક વાત એ કે એ છમાં દીપિકાનો રોલ સૌથી વધુ લાંબો છે. ફિલ્મ એશિયન માર્કેટને ધ્યાનમાં રાખીને જ બનાવવામાં આવી છે એ ફિલ્મમાં ઠૂંસેલા એશિયન કલાકારોને જોઈને સ્પષ્ટ થાય છે. ભારતની પાદુકોણે ઉપરાંત થાઇલેન્ડ(ટોની ઝા), ચીન(ક્રિસ વુ), હોંગકોંગ(ડોની યેન)ના કલાકારોનો મેળો જામ્યો છે. બધાં સતત અહીંથી તહીં ઉછળકૂદ કર્યા કરે છે, શા માટે એ તો ભગવાન જાણે! બેકગ્રાઉન્ડ સ્કોર અને થ્રીડી ઇફેક્ટ્સ ટોપક્લાસ. એક્શન ધમાકેદાર પણ કશી જ નવીનવા વગરનું. અને વાર્તાને નામે મોટ્ટું મીંડુ! ડાયલોગ્સ અત્યંત વાહિયાત! ફક્ત દીપિકા માટે આ ફિલ્મ જોવા જશો તો પણ નિરાશ થશો કેમકે રોલની લંબાઈ સારા પરફોર્મન્સની ગેરંટી નથી જ આપતી. વિન ડિઝલ નામનો ટકલો ક્યારેય ગમ્યો નથી એટલે એના વિશે લખીને સમય બરબાદ નથી કરવો. લખવા જેવું એણે કાંઈ ઉકાળ્યુંય નથી. પાંચમાંથી ૨ સ્ટાર્સ...   

Book Review of 'Game Plan' by Fredy Ilaviya

Author Fredy Ilaviya’s first book ‘Walked Away with My Soul’ was a poignant tale of a woman in trouble. His second book ‘Game Plan’ also features a female protagonist in distress. Naina is desirable. Kabir and Akash fall for her, but she turns their love proposal down. Years later, the guys come to know that their lost love is in serious trouble. Naina needs help. Will they help her? And how, if yes, is the rest of the story. 

Woven in the Backdrop of the juridical system of India, ‘Game Plan’ is a nice read from the beginning to the very end. The plot seems familiar, but the proceedings are interesting enough to hold the readers. The characters have significant depth (which I loved), and what they do seems very much believable. It’s like one is witnessing a neighboring story. The cover is catchy, the language, flawless! The layouting and the printing is A-grade. All in all, this tale of love and friendship is a satisfying read. 

Go for it. I would give it 3.5 stars out of 5

Film review ‘PASSENGERS’: sleek and stylish, but not satisfying enough…

During the last two years, Hollywood has gifted us great SI-FIs such as INTERSTELLER, GRAVITY and THE MARTIAN. Sadly, PASSENGERS does not match up to those classics at ANY STAGE. Despite the rich look and brilliant technical aspects, PASSENGERS doesn’t have much to offer in terms of storytelling, which is the main drawback of this sleek-looking film. The first half is good enough but the second half moves without any unpredictability and culminates into a dud climax. The saving grace is the awesome screen presence of JENNIEFER LAWRENCE and CRISS PRATT, and the great chemistry between them. A one-time watch for the Hollywood buffs like me. The rest can simply give it a miss. 3 stars out of 5.
